At the highest point of Rush Rhees Library perches Hopeman Carillon, consisting of 50 cast and tuned bronze bells played by a carillonneur. The bells of the University of Rochester Carillon vary in size and weight from the smallest of 26 pounds (7 1/8 inch diameter) to the largest bell, the “Bourdon,” weighing nearly 1411 pounds with a diameter of nearly 41 inches. The carillon bells were cast by the Dutch foundry, Royal Eijsbouts in 1973. The total combined weight of the carillon bells is approximately 6,668 pounds. The carillon is played regularly year-long by the UR Carillon Society and Doris Aman.
