Grosse Pointe Memorial Church (Memorial Tower)
The Grosse Pointe Memorial Church carillon contains 48 bells spanning four octaves, transposing up a half step from concert pitch. Its lowest C-major octave was cast by Gillett and Johnston (8 bells, England, 1927), and most of the other bells were added for the 25th anniversary of the church building (39 bells by Petit & Fritsen, the Netherlands, 1952). The carillon was dedicated on May 25, 1952, by the eminent Percival Price, Carillonneur of the University of Michigan.
The instrument was completely renovated by Meeks, Watson & Company in 2015, including retuning of the bells, a new bell frame and layout, new clappers, and a new playing console. Significantly, a final bell, the low E-flat, was cast by Taylor in England, rectifying a longstanding deficiency of the instrument and allowing a wider variety of music to be played. The new bell was dedicated to the church’s long-time senior carillonist Phyllis Webb (1925-2016), and is inscribed “The Webb Bell.”
The carillon is played before and after Sunday services twice per month by Carson Landry, as well as by guests on Tuesday evenings in July for its annual summer concert series.
