About:

Designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn, Burton Memorial Tower serves as a main visual landmark on the central campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Built in 1936, the tower houses the Charles Baird Carillon, containing 53 bronze bells cast by John Taylor & Co. in Loughborough, England. The instrument is considered the third-heaviest carillon in the world and transposes down four semitones. The largest bell, which strikes the hour, weighs 12 tons, while the smallest bell, 4 1⁄2 octaves above, weighs just 15 pounds. The Baird Carillon hosts a joint summer concert series with the Lurie Carillon and is played on weekdays at noon during the academic year by University Carillonist Dr. Tiffany Ng, area carillonists, and members of the @umcarillon studio and student-run guild. The tower also contains two practice instruments, offices for the arts-presenting organization @ums, and classroom spaces.
