About:

The Arthur R. Metz Memorial Carillon is one of three bell instruments on Indiana University Bloomington’s campus. With two carillons and a chime, IU Bloomington is a true “heavy metal” school; one can hear the joyful ringing of bells on campus throughout the day! The Metz Carillon was newly renovated and expanded in 2020 by the Royal Eijsbouts Bellfoundry. Thanks to the addition of four new bells, the Metz Carillon now boasts an impressive 65 bells, along with the status of “grand carillon”. This fine instrument is located in the heart of campus in IU’s Cox Arboretum, where students can sit by the lily pond and enjoy weekly concerts played by Wade FitzGerald and his studio of eight students. During his first year as Associate Instructor of Carillon at IU, Wade has played many recitals, collaborated with IU’s astronomy department on a night-sky-themed recital featuring telescopes and educational outreach, and been featured with the Metz Carillon on an episode of WTIU’s “Journey Indiana” series. If you’re ever in the Bloomington area, you should stop by and hear the incredible and unique sounds of our many bells on campus. Also, be sure to stick around at the end of a carillon recital, as tower tours are always offered!
